ASAP (Acute Stress Adaptive Protocol) Training for Mental Health Professionals is a comprehensive 16-hour course tailored for clinicians working with first responders, peer support teams, and military personnel. This EMDR-based intervention specifically addresses the repeated and acute nature of traumatic stress experienced by these groups.
The protocol was developed by a former police officer who transitioned to become an EMDR consultant, bringing over 30 years of clinical and practical experience in working with first responders. Key Features of ASAP:
Group and Individual Intervention: The ASAP can be administered peer-to-peer without the need for a licensed mental health professional. Scripted Manual: Facilitators and peers are guided through the 8 steps of the ASAP worksheet using a detailed manual.
Two Phases:
Phase One: Focuses on building resources through mindfulness and self-regulation techniques. It also serves as a screening tool to identify participants struggling with severe traumatic stress.
Phase Two: Involves trauma processing using the principles of EMDR therapy, including eye movements (bilateral stimulation) and reprocessing traumatic memories. This phase is unique in that participants work silently and individually on their personalized traumatic events, without needing to engage in dialogue.
Benefits and Research:
Adaptive Information Processing Model: The theoretical foundation used in EMDR therapy is also applied ASAP. Compassion-Focused Mindfulness: Draws attention to complex trauma issues such as moral injury.
Proven Effectiveness: Research has shown that ASAP is safe, effective, relevant, and efficient. It has been demonstrated to reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms by 44% in first responders. Additionally, when combined with compassion-focused psychoeducation and used intensively over a four-day period with eight ASAP sessions, it has a positive effect on moral injury.
Instructor:
The ASAP training will be facilitated by Stephanie M. Conn, PhD, ABPP. Dr. Conn, a former police officer, specializes in stress, trauma, coping, peer support & resilience. She is Board Certified as a Police & Public Safety psychologist with 28 years of combined experience working in the first responder field. She supports first responder agencies with CISM, peer support, & mental health training, contributing to national peer support guidelines.
